On May 22 in 1990, the People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen in the South, and the Yemen Arab Republic in the North, became a unified country, called the Republic of Yemen. Since then, Yemenis throughout the country have celebrated Unity Day every year. Flags are hoisted on the streets, shopping centers’ doors are painted and many people host small family gatherings at their home.

Asma’a Al-Saiaghi has a master’s degree in sociology and is the director of a local charity association. By many measures, she is an already accomplished woman but every morning she makes the two-hour journey from her home in the Hiziz area to a local hotel in Sana’a to attend a training program that is providing tools for 30 Yemeni women to propel them forward as social leaders.

At a secluded café near a main street in Sana'a, a group of ladies gather to smoke shisha, flavored tobacco that is traditionally smoked out of a long pipe that is also known as a hookah. Booming echoes of laughter fill their small space, with the five ladies clearly enjoying their latest social session.
