Symposia on Poverty in Yemen

Today, Monday, October 20th, the Center for Yemeni Research and Studies will organize a symposium on the economic conditions of the poor in Yemen.
Tomorrow, the Economic Department at Sanaa University will organize a symposium on "Poverty in Yemen".
Both symposia address the deteriorating conditions of the vulnerable segments of the Yemenis society, and the impact of the economic reforms on them.


Female Leaders on their Way to Britain

Invited by the UK Government, a group of 8 Yemeni women are headed for London on a one-week workshop which starts on 30th October. "This engagement comes as part of the effort to involve Yemeni women in business and public life," said Mr. Brendan McSharry, Director of the British Council.


EC Sponsors Workshop on Yemeni 1997 Elections

Under the auspices of the European Commission, the University of Munich is organizing a workshop on elections in the Middle East. Five case studies - Yemen, Jordan, Egypt, Algeria and Iran are being discussed.
The workshop will take place in Brussels during 18-20/1/1998.


Yemeni-Algerian Fraternal Association Created
Today, Monday, October 20th, the constituent meeting of the Yemeni-Algerian Fraternal Association is being held. Mr. Ali Abdullah Sallal is tipped to be the chairman of the association.

German Orientalist Meets Yemeni Intellectuals

Professor Annemarie Schimmel of Germany is in Yemen on a ten-day visit to the country at the invitation of the Foreign Minister, Dr. Abdul-Karim Al-Iryani. Dr. Schimmel gave a lecture on the life and work of another orientalist, Dr. Friedrich-Ruckert-Preis. She also met with a number of Yemeni intellectuals and scholars.
Dr. Schimmel is a leading scholar on Islamic studies. She speaks Arabic, Persian, Turkish, and has published extensively.


Parliament Saddled over Choice of
Supreme Elections Committee

The House of Deputees is in a fix as it tries to nominate the new list of members of the Supreme Elections Committee. According to the law, it is the parliament that should select the 15 names on the list, from which the President will draw the members. As it happens, parliament was confronted with a ready-made list, which it is trying to resist.
The following weeks will witness more difficulties in the relations between the Islah and PGC parties over this and other issues. Meanwhile, Sheikh Abdullah Bin Hussain Al-Ahmar, Speaker, is staying at home.

Fighting Smoke, Qat

The Minister of Health decreed on October 15th that qat is forbidden in the premises of the ministry, hospitals, clinics, etc. Earlier, the Minister had forbidden smoking inside the premises of the ministry.
It is believed that neither ruling will be truly observed.
