Girl
Abducted in Taiz
The
Security bodies in Taiz arrested Ameen Hassan Saif, accused of committing
several crimes including abduction of the 4-year old Amal Abdulsalam Al-Nehari.
The girl was kidnapped while playing in front of her house and was
taken to a remote place in the city where she was brutally tortured.
The kidnapper tried to convince her that he was her father, and sometimes
forced her to call him Dad. He was arrested while visiting a friend who,
seeing the bruises on little girl's face, immediately reported to the police.
Security sources said the accused was aberrant and drunken and had
been previously convicted on many charges such as theft. Investigations
are still underway to find out the motive behind this act.
USA
Mourns USSCole Victims
The USA mourned on Friday October 12th the 17 American marines killed
one year ago on the USS Cole Destroyer bombed at Aden Seaport. The incident
hit one of the most sophisticated U.S. warships. Now tracking down those
who masterminded the attack is one of the goals of the U.S.'s campaign
against terrorism. Six suspects presumed to be involved in the USS Cole
incident are to be brought to justice within the next couple of days.
Yemeni officials said Sana'a was very eager to close the file pertaining
to the incident; however, it had approved the U.S. request to postpone
the trial of the suspects in order to collect further information and track
down more suspects.
Abdulqadir Bajammal, Prime Minister, stated that the Cole's file had
almost been completed, adding that Sana'a and Washington had been cooperating
in collecting information about some people outside Yemen. Abdula al-Saeedi,
Vice-Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said Yemen and the USA
had not yet discovered a definite link between Osama bin Laden and the
USS Cole incident. Also, Rashad al-Alimi, Minister of Interior, noted that
the Cole incident had mostly been completed and ready to referred to the
court, adding that the American side was the one who requested the delay.
British
Embassy Approves New Projects
As part of its commitment to support Yemen's development, the UK government
provided developmental aid under the annual Small Grants Program, carried
out by the Department for International Development.
In August and September, the British Embassy approved funding for a
total of 11 projects in the Capital Secretariat of Sana'a, two in Aden,
and one each in Hadhramout, Hajja, Mahweet and Socotra. The major focus
of the projects is the alleviation of poverty and improving the quality
of life of the disadvantaged and marginalized. Projects include rural water
resource management, assistance to the physically disabled, primary health
care and educational programs. The Small Grants Program is managed in Yemen
by the British Council.
SAUDI
FIRM TO BUILD ADEN TOWNSHIP
Prime
Minister Abdulqadir Bajammal was introduced on October 10th to the largest
township project to be built on Yemeni soil. The project will be implemented
by Saudi Power Development Group headed by Sheikh Osama I.A. Abu Dawood,
Roy's Associates International Inc., GC Construction and Development industries
LTD. India. The first phase of the project will cost approximately USD
500 million. The township will be completed in 15 years and will cover
an area of 935 hectares and will provide 16,000 housing units.
Fourth
Science Conference Concluded
The Yemeni Scientific Research Foundation (YSRF) concluded last Saturday
the Fourth Science Conference, held at the Sheraton Hotel.
Three hundred working papers on medicine, agriculture, mathematics,
geology and marine sciences, engineering, chemistry, biology, physics,
meteorology, environment and power were elaborately discussed during the
three-day conference. More than 2000 people from different countries participated
in the conference. Speeches were delivered to develop clear goals to build
strong ties between higher education and scientific research.
The participants emphasized necessity of exchanging experiences among
scientists and researchers.
Carpenters
Exhibition in Taiz
The Social Handicraft Carpenters Association, in cooperation with the
German Enterprise for Small Industries, inaugurated last week the first
handicraft exhibition in Al-Shaab School in Taiz. The Secretary General
of the Association, Mahmood Al-Qadhi said the main aim of this exhibition
was to encourage carpenters' marketing skills and to improve their handicraft
products.
The Social Handicraft Carpenters Association was recently founded with
the goal of improving carpenters' technical skills. The exhibition will
continue until October 25.
Yemenia
Prohibits Smoking on all its Flights
In an unprecedented move, Yemenia management decided, starting last
week, to prohibit smoking on all its local and international flights. Yemenia
has taken this step as part of its comprehensive plan to improve overall
quality of its services to its local and foreign customers. It is worth
noting that most major airlines worldwide prohibit smoking on their flights,
especially after realizing the health and security risks of smoking to
passengers on long international flights.

Calls for Neutrality
The Yemeni Journalists Syndicate (YJS) called, in a press release, upon
Yemeni journalists to observe neutrality regarding the case of Dalaq and
the editor-in-chief of the 26 September newspaper Ali Muhssen al-Shatir.
The release urged on the two parties to observe self-control and stop
the counter media campaigns prior to the ruling of the court.
According to the press release, the journalists should avoid tackling
an issue already at the court until justice takes its course.
Yemen
& Oman Join Hands to Fight Smuggling
Yemen and the Sultanate of Oman agreed at the end of the fourth meeting
held in Sana'a by their borders authorities to jointly combat smuggling
across the Yemen-Oman borders.
The two sides also ratified a draft security agreement to enhance the
security relations between the two countries, which will put an end for
customs evasion and trade irregularities.

Publishes Two News Features
Yemen
News Agency (Saba) has published two news features following up the latest
developments related to the U.S.-anti-terror campaign. The two features
"The U.S... after the Storm" and "The U.S. Toward the War"
are among the best features that have so far been published by the agency.
The two files include in-depth reporting, analysis and news stories about
the attacks on New York and Washington depending on different sources.
The new publications are the product of the Reporting Department at
the agency headed by Mr. Abdulelah Shaya'a and the support of Mr. Nasar
Taha Mustafa Chairman of the Board of Directors of Saba News Agency.
